Hyde Park ArtSceneArtScene 2007. The Fourth Annual "Hyde Park ArtScene" festival, featuring area artists of all mediums as well as local ethnic performances in music and dance, is scheduled for Saturday, July 14. Logan Square, the central block of Fairmount Avenue, will be closed from 5 pm to 9 pm, providing a space for visual artists to display and sell their artwork. The local restaurants and businesses in Logan Square will remain open, giving festival patrons the opportunity to explore the local culture of Hyde Park. Irish step dancers, a Spanish solo artist and a singing duo of Haitian brothers are just a few of the many performances planned for this year's festival. Visitors may stroll through the square and enjoy the action on the stage from many tables arranged café-style throughout the festival setting. "ArtScene" is free, handicapped accessible and open to the public.

Arts/Business Kick Off. This year's Arts/Business Kickoff is scheduled for October 13. It will be held at the George Wright Golf Course in Hyde Park. This year's event will be combined with "A Taste of the World in Hyde Park." Watch the HPAI website for more information as the date gets closer, but save the date now!

Riverside Theatre Works Presents "Kiss Me, Kate!". "Kiss Me, Kate," the latest production from the Riverside Theatre Works' Musical Theatre 3 program, recently took the stage on the weekend of June 15, 16, and 17 under the direction of Tarah Brooke Watkins. The Tony Award winning musical, with music by Cole Porter, debuted in 1948, and features such classic tunes as "Wunderbar," and "It's Too Darn Hot." "Kiss Me, Kate" is based on William Shakespeare's play, "The Taming of the Shrew," and tells the story of a divorced couple playing the feuding lovers Katherine and Petruchio in an opera of "Shrew," whose relationship runs remarkably parallel to the characters they portray.

Designed for youths ages 13-18, specifically those with serious passions for the theater, Riverside Theater Works' Musical Theatre 3 program meets every Tuesday over the course of the school year. It begins with a six-week intensive audition workshop, teaching students what to wear, what to say, and how to introduce the pieces that he or she is performing. The students prepare several monologues and songs during this period, until they are ready for the proper audition in October. Musical Theatre 3 productions are typically double-cast, thus providing more students with performance opportunities; in the case of "Kiss Me, Kate," each student appeared in 2 of the 4 performances. The show was professionally costumed and designed as well, allowing students the opportunity to experience all aspects of a full musical theatre production.

Hyde Park Branch Library Presents ReadBoston Storymobile, beginning Fridays in July. Beginning July 13, the Hyde Park Branch Library will host a weekly Storymobile event for children. Sponsored by ReadBoston, Storymobile features professional storytellers performing dramatic readings of some of the most popular children's stories. In addition, each child that attends will receive a free book from ReadBoston, to help him or her begin to develop a personal home library, and further promote literacy outside of school. The program will take place every Friday through August 17 at 1:15pm at the Hyde Park Branch Library.

ReadBoston was founded by Mayor Menino in 1995 in an effort to increase the overall literacy level of Boston youths. Its goal is to ensure that all children in Boston read at or above grade level by the end of their third grade year, both through collaboration with Boston school teachers and child care programs, as well as through the support and integration of literary practices and materials in the home.
