Seniorpalooza!

EthosMay is Elder Americans Month, and a local non-profit has created a unique an innovative way to celebrate. Ethos, an organization dedicated to promoting independence, dignity and well being among the elderly, will be holding its 3rd annual Seniorpalooza event in Hyde Park this May in recognition of Elder Americans month.

Seniorpalooza is designed as a month long series of lectures, demonstrations, interactive events and fun activities targeted to local seniors, the goal being to keep them connected to their communities while raising visibility and support for seniors among local businesses and organizations. Each year Ethos targets a a different neighborhood of Boston to celebrate Seniorpalooza, and this year it is Hyde Park. Throughout the month a variety of free activities and events are planned for Hyde Park seniors including discussions at the Hyde Park library on topics including "All About Arthritis" and "The Joys of Growing Old." In addition, the YMCA will be offering free classes and admission to those over 50 through May 13, and hosting a Senior Tea on May 7. The Hyde Park Community Center will host a "Senior Prom" featuring cabaret entertainment by Mixed Emotions on May 18th and will be hosting a comprehensive Senior Expo on May 30th. A variety of businesses throughout Hyde Park are offering discounts to seniors this month as well.

Ethos was founded in 1972 by a group of motivated southwest Boston activists after then Governor Frank Sargent issued a call for initiatives to help elders age "in place." Since then the agency has grown and now provides a multitude of services including; homecare, caregiver support, ombudsman, delivered meals and nutrition, elders in crisis, volunteer services, and money management services to elders throughout Boston.

Taste Of Hyde Park a Success!

Tase of Hyde Park"The Taste of Hyde Park" held on April 28 was a huge success for first time event planners, 02136, All Things Hyde Park. The festivities sold out before any advertising for the event could be done, indicating that this was an idea that was long overdue! 80 Attendees were transported throughout Hyde Park on trolleys, with Representative Angelo Scaccia, former City Councilor Joe "Sonny" Tierney, and Current City Councilor Rob Consalvo serving as MCs. Those who planned the event feel it was a success and that they achieved their goals of promoting the "hidden" gems of Hyde Park, acquainting the community with the wonderful things Hyde Park has to offer, and promoting local merchants. Hats off to the 02136 committee for a job well done! Word has it they have more tricks up their sleeves, and anyone interested in helping out on future endeavors is encouraged to volunteer!
